Workings of an Access Point

I am new to the wireless environment, and was looking for information about how the the Access Point handles the frames from the wired and wireless Interfaces.

AP is layer 2 device . Between wireless client and AP there is protocol call

csma/ca . It is like csma/cd but it has extra signaling call RTS and CTS .

Once the packet is received on wireless interface , it is FIFO to wired interface

(FIFO=first in first out )

Now in Cisco AP we have QOS ( 802.11e ) , so you can set the ip precedence

and dscp .

If you want to watch traffic flowing from wireless to wired media enable trace on Ap 350 and Ap 1200 .

The Wireless LAN Adapters, also referred to as client adapters, are radio modules that provide transparent wireless data communications between fixed, portable, or mobile devices and other wireless devices or a wired network infrastructure. The client adapters are fully compatible when used in devices supporting Plug-and-Play (PnP) technology. The primary function of the client adapters is to transfer data packets transparently through the wireless infrastructure. The adapters operate similarly to a standard network product except that the cable is replaced with a radio connection. No special wireless networking functions are required, and all existing applications that operate over a network will operate using the adapters.

The client adapter contains a direct-sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) radio that operates in the 2.4-GHz license-free Industrial Scientific Medical (ISM) band. The radio transmits data over a half-duplex radio channel operating at up to 11 Mbps.

DSSS technology causes radio signals to be transmitted over a wide frequency range, using multiple frequencies simultaneously. The benefit of this technology is its ability to protect the data transmission from interference. For example, if a particular frequency encounters noise or interference or both, enough redundancy is built into the signal on other frequencies that the client adapter usually will still be successful in its transmission

For the purposes of design, plan as if you're working with a 10Meg hub - shared bandwidth.

As you start applying higher levels of security, the throughput (or latency, depending) may start to degrade. It's situational depending on how many stations, and the processing needs for encrypt/decrypt etc.
