I have just got my first Cisco router (107) up and running. Although I managed to suss out how to configure the router ok (I like SDM:) I am a bit unsure about about how Cisco operate. I can download SDM updates however do I need a Service contract to obtain IOS updates? Also SDM reports that the IOS on my router does not support the requested feature (VPN, IPS, NAC) and to upgrade the IOS image to one that supports these - Does this mean that I can add these features to the router? If I need a service contract how much does it cost and where do I get it?
Thanks for your response however that isn't what I was asking. And actually it isn't very clear on it's supported features boasting several times about it's MPLS-based VPN capabilities - however this is just marketing blurb for VPN-pass through. Anyway my question was more general and I now know that I require a SMARTnet subscription for IOS updates and TAC. One question remains unanswered - are Cisco routers generally feature upgradable?
You need a SMARTnet contract to access updates and TAC. The SB107 only lists IP FW for IOS downloads in the Upgrade Planner which is just the IP feature set with the Firewall feature set as far as I know. No VPN support or IDS.
This is actually a pretty cool feature, i didn't even know it existed until I was looking for a solution to advertise a subnet (prefix in BGP talk), only if a certain condition existed. This is exactly what conditional advertisements does
