Internet leased line hardware/link sizing for small ISP

FAQ for Internet leased line.

As a service provider what will be the basic technical questionnaire that should be asked to a reseller (Small ISP) before selling him the internet bandwidth pipe of 45Mbps to 90 Mbps. Also what all network devices (CPE) 2800/3800 router will be required at the premises of the Small ISP + type of media to be proposed Ethernet/ds3.

Any advice is highly appreciated

Hi Manoj

Its not only the kinda interface and the amount of bandwidth handled by the router.

You need to consider other things like the IGP which you are going to configure in that and also BGP if you are planning to do so.

Also need to check out whether its gonna be a simple Gateway router for the Small ISP or gonna act a backbone router connecting other cities or as a access router connecting customer links on it.

You have different kinda outputs available from the MUX part where your fiber gets terminated.

You can look out for ethernet even gigabit ethrenet in which you wont have any future problems in scaling up the bandwidth.

But if you are sure that current bandwidth is already a overkill then you can think of going on for STM1 ports or other ports based on the bandwidth requirement and capacity..

AFAIK 2800 or 3800 wont be handy when you terminate 45Mbps with routing protocols running in it..

Hi Manoj,

The MOST imporatant thing whenever one goes ahead with Data Links is SLA!

Because there are several catches what a Sales Guy migt sell you and what the actual implementation would be, for instance if the Sales tell you that you are going to have 45Mbps (or E-3) with 1:4 for, infact most of the time you would be getting only 1/4 of the 45Mbps because its being shared by 3 other entities.

Secondly the response time during the down time etc. should all be well covered.

Finally, on the technical side these days most of the ISPs come up with Ethernet (WLAN also) or E-3 (multiple E-3s) for links upto 100Mbps links.

Try to get WLAN if possible, because the mainenance and downtime is very rare, however make sure that you implement proper failover mechanism, as the Ethernet doesnt go down even if there is a link failure on the otherside of the site.
