We have 837 series ADSL router. Immediately after configuration the RXD & TXD light starts blinking. I never have plugged into the ADSL phone line jack. I have configured the DHCP server and my PC is acquiring an Address.
When i use show ip interface brief it shows UP Up for both Dialer 0 and Ethernet 0. I d't know how its possible for showing the Dialer 0 up up without plugging into the telephone jack.
"Cisco Dial-on-Demand Routing (DDR) provides several functions. First DDR spoofs routing tables to provide the image of full-time connectivity using Dialer interfaces. Spoofing is needed because in order for the router to forward a packet, the destination network must be in the routing table. If the destination network was not spoofed, the packet may be dropped by the router".
The physical interfaces associated with the dialer interface do not need to be up for the Dialer interface itself to be up.
Inactive DDR connections are spoofed to appear as active to routing tables. The dialer interface has to be in a spoofing state (pretending to be up/up) so the routing table can point to this interface. You've gotta remember that any routes that point to 'down' interfaces are NOT installed in the routing table. That's the reason the router makes the dialer interface pretend to be up.
This is actually a pretty cool feature, i didn't even know it existed until I was looking for a solution to advertise a subnet (prefix in BGP talk), only if a certain condition existed. This is exactly what conditional advertisements does
