We have 1042 APs through our head office. We have several 2602 APs spare. Would we gain anything by swapping them over, is there much of a difference for performance?

Yes, performance wise 1042 is 2x2:2 (ie two tx & two rx antenna with 2 spatial stream support) & max you can get 300Mbps PHY rate.
On the other hand 2602 is 3x4:3 (ie 3 tx & 4 rx antenna with 3 spatial stream support) & max you can get 450Mbps PHY rate.

When replacing make sure your WLC has compatible software version for these AP (if you are running 7.4.121.0 or 7.6.130.0 that should be fine)
