Planning an upgrade this weekend for a 5508 from 7.3 to 7.4MR2 with about 350 AP's connected. There is a mix of AP's beginning with 1242's up to 3600's. If possible, to mitigate downtime we would like to pre-download the image to the AP. I understand this is not possible for the 1242's due to not having enough memory. Could we do all the others except the 1242's? We typically scheduled downtime, and just let the AP's reboot and download code, but if it could be done the other way to avoid extended downtime we would like to attempt that as a lot of these access points are on slower WAN links.

Yes you can do a pre-download on your other AP's that have 32mb of memory, just not your older AP's like thw 1242 which you already know about. Your downtime will still be impacted due to the 1242's.

Please don't forget to also upgrade the FUS code of your WLC.
