APs failing after buying new ones

On a WLC 5508, which was already running fine, with APs of the 1042 and 1131 type, new access points (type 2602i) are added. Since then, the AP's often stop working. This happens with both the 1042 and 2602i types of AP. The 1131 APs have no problems.

When an AP malfunctions, its LED starts blinking green.

Any ideas what this could be?

Re: APs failing after buying new ones

Upgrade your WLC Field Upgrade Software (FUS) to 1.7 & see. Below describe the upgrade procedure.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/controller/release/notes/fus_rn_1_7_0_0.html

It is the recomended version of FUS for WLC code 7.4 onwards. Sometime these sort of AP behaviour (if that happen to multiple APs randomly) could cause by this.

This upgrade process usually takes around 30min & get enough outage window to do this upgrade.

WLC 7.5.x release note also highlighted this upgrade requirement  as well.

Going to install the upgrade one of these days. I'll let you know the results.

FUS installed. We are now monitoring the APs to see if they still fail.

Hi Tom,

Did that FUS upgrade helps you to fix the issue ?

Yes it did! Thanks for reminding me to update it here. I was planning to, and then it became busy and I forgot.

Re: APs failing after buying new ones

I would check the cabling and also maybe run a TDR test off the switch if it's a Cisco switch. Ethernet compared to Gigabit and cabling at times can be the issue. This also includes patch cables.

You also should look at the switch logs and port for errors. What is the uptime and join time for the AP's?

If you have a Cisco switch, you can do TDR (if it's supported).
