Cannot access GUI when management is trunk

Playing with the virtual WLC and ran into a strange problem. When I have the management interface set to trunk I cannot access the GUI or SSH – the APs still register, clients still authenticate and I can still ping; I just can’t manage it. If I switch it back to access (VLAN 0) the GUI starts to work again.

The ESX server is configured correctly and it's sending the trunks.

I have a 5508 setup largely the same way and it seems to be working fine.

Any ideas?

Hi Brian,

Does your VM NIC configured with a port group which will allow multiple vlan ?  I have recently created a VM for testing & was able to do this. Here is some of settings of that VM (Vlan 1290 is mgmt & tag at WLC & vlan 1420 is the user vlan)

(vWLC) >show  interface detailed management

Interface Name................................... management

MAC Address...................................... 00:50:56:b9:33:e9

IP Address....................................... 10.129.0.7

IP Netmask....................................... 255.255.254.0

IP Gateway....................................... 10.129.1.250

External NAT IP State............................ Disabled

External NAT IP Address.......................... 0.0.0.0

VLAN............................................. 1290

The problem was due to an interoperability issue between ESXi and the HP G8 blades. Both Cisco and VMWare have identified an issue where the packets are corrupted once trunking is enabled. VMWare is working with HP to resolve the issue.
