Cisco 5508 WLC Remote Access Points are not registring

hi, i have deployed WLC 5508 in head office with current 56 access points (mix of 1262N, 1141N and 1242) are regist ered and working fine, recently we extended to our remote office (connected over Layer 3 MPLS with OSPF Protocol) were none of the access points are not registering, i am able to reach to the controller from the specific VLAN and native VLAN without any issues. @remote site i have enabled option 43 and option 60 with the controller IP.

Usually the ip address needs to be in hex.

Re: Cisco 5508 WLC Remote Access Points are not registring

Piggy backing Scott. The only AP that took ASCII for the option 43 were the old 10x0 models. All the newer need to use hex. Option 60 would be the VCI so something like Cisco AP c1140

Change your option 43 for this one Option 43 hex f104.ac14.0005

Maybe this are the reason?

Cisco 5508 WLC Remote Access Points are not registring

Have you added the controller to your DNS? On your DNS, create a local host entry cisco-capwap-controller with the 5508 management IP. On your dhcp server, on the scope options, enable options 15 and type your domain name. This should work without the need for option 43

Cisco 5508 WLC Remote Access Points are not registring

DHCP is configured at remote sid on 4503-E cisco switch as below,

ip dhcp pool szwldhcppool
   network 172.20.2.0 255.255.255.0
   default-router 172.20.2.1
   option 43 ip 172.20.0.5
option 60 ip 172.20.0.5ip dhcp pool szwldhcppool
   network 172.20.2.0 255.255.255.0
   default-router 172.20.2.1
   option 43 ip 172.20.0.5
   option 60 ip 172.20.0.5

ip dhcp pool szwldhcppool
   network 172.20.2.0 255.255.255.0
   default-router 172.20.2.1
   option 43 ip 172.20.0.5
   option 60 ip 172.20.0.5

where the 172.20.0.5 is the WLC management IP, DNS entry is not added for controller IP

Date and time looks incorrect.  How is time set on the WLC?

Re: Cisco 5508 WLC Remote Access Points are not registring

I think Leo wanted to quote the following:

*Mar  1 00:10:41.995: %CAPWAP-5-DHCP_RENEW: Could not discover WLC using DHCP IP. Renewing DHCP IP.

Which tells that the AP got an option 43 from WLC but it could not join using that one.

Besides, you should not configure option 60 under the scope. You delete the configuraiton for option 60. option 60 should be included in the DHCP request from the AP.

I never tried it but it would possibly work with ASCII option 43 IP address. Nothing is saying it will not.

HEX format for option 43 has more informaiton than the ASCII because it is in TLV format. ASCII format lacks this information. But no document I found said "using ASCII won't work". But all docs mention only using hex format which is of course the best practice.

If deleteing option 60 did not work then you need to go to hex format. It is obvious that the problem with DHCP option 43 as per hte message quoted above.

You may also conswider other options for discovery than DHCP; DNS for example.

Mapping "CISCO-CAPWAP-CONTROLLE" (without quotes) to your Management IP address on your DNS will get the issue resolved. But DHCP should of course be configured for correct IP address for DNS.

Good luck.

Cisco 5508 WLC Remote Access Points are not registring

Help! Wierd issue getting the error:

: %CAPWAP-3-ERRORLOG: Invalid event 38 & state 2 combination

I have 32 APs connected fine using HEX option 43 with no VCI set and everything worked fine all the same type of APs 3602 and now after my server team last night updated from 2003 dhcp to 2008 my aps are getting the above error and my APs are not registering. Anybody have an issue like this after upgrading to Windows 2008 dhcp?

Thanks Andrew
