Cisco APs not updating after WLC-update

Hello everyone,

I need to update my 5508 WLCs to a newer software, to support new AP-models.

Started with AIR-CT5500-K9-1-7-0-0-FUS.aes and AIR-CT5500-K9-7-0-240-0.aes, everything worked fine. Pre-Downloaded the newer Image to the APs, restarted the WLCs and everything was ok.

Now I tried to update to 7.6.100.0 as well as 7.4.121.0. Both Versions should support my APs, but it doesn't work at all.

Any ideas are highly appreciated.

If you need further output, just let me know.

Regards,

Manuel

Cisco APs not updating after WLC-update

Predownload on the 1240 won't work because the 1240 doesn't have enough flash memory to store two IOS.

I run 7.6.100.0 and I have several 1240.  Your 1240 will still work with 7.6.100.0, however, it is not clear whether 1130/1240 will work when 8.0 gets out.

Agree with Leo

I don't think you can pre download to those older APs due to the memory.

Guidelines and Limitations for Predownloading Images

Follow these guidelines when you use image predownloading:

  • The maximum number of concurrent predownloads is limited to half the number of concurrent normal image downloads. This limitation allows new access points to join the controller during image downloading.

  • If you reach the predownload limit, then the access points that cannot get an image sleep for a time between 180 to 600 seconds and then reattempt the predownload.

  • Before you enter the predownload command, you should change the active controller boot image to the backup image. This step ensures that if the controller reboots for some reason, it comes back up with the earlier running image, not the partially downloaded upgrade image.

  • Access points with 16-MB total available memory (1130 and 1240 access points) may not have enough free memory to download an upgrade image and may automatically delete crash info files, radio files, and any backup images to free up space. However, this limitation does not affect the predownload process because the predownload image replaces any backup image on the access point.

Hope it helps.

Cisco APs not updating after WLC-update

thank you very much for your replies.

ok, maybe pre-downloading does'nt work, even if I don't understand why the controllers report everything is fine...

but: if I restart the controllers with a newer version than 7.0.240.0 without pre-downloading that version to the accesspoints before, they just download the newer version, and after they try to join the controller again, they report that the version on the controller is different ant try the update again and again and again... :-/

that 4th point is exactly what I see on the accesspoints if I take a look at the directory of the APs IOS itself.

but it doesn't explain why predownloading shouldn't work. I think it is working...

Cisco APs not updating after WLC-update

Hi,

1st upgrade WLC to 7.4 and theny try to connect AP.

Here u will have Active: 7.4

Backup: 7.0.240

Paste the logs

2nd  then Upgrade to 7.6 and then again try to connect AP.

Here u will have Active: 7.6

Hey Sandeep,

I'll do this and post the logfiles.

Since I have to work with a highly productive environment I'll have to wait to get a time-slot this night for rebooting the controllers.

Re: Cisco APs not updating after WLC-update

The 1240's will not download the image since it doesn't have enough memory to handle multiple images on flash. When you upgrade the WLC code and reboot the WLC, the AP's will rejoin the WLC and the WLC will push the correct image to the access points. The catch here is that you need to make sure you have enough flash memory available. I have went through each AP's and deleted event logs and crash files and RCV images prior to rebooting the WLC. I have also not done that and just rebooted the WLC and then visit AP's that failed to come back up. Many time it was due to the flash being full and not enough memory.

Re: Cisco APs not updating after WLC-update

The event log is the only thing you can delete. There is only 16mb of flash memory and there isn't enough memory to store another image. If you reload the WLC with the new code, these AP's will or should I say should join and download the image. Pre-download will not work. Is that what your trying?

Re: Cisco APs not updating after WLC-update

Hi Scott,

I am not trying to pre-download it anymore, since this doesn't work at all.

If I just restart the controller, the APs are downloading the image telling me "everything is fine", are rebooted and that stated with the old image again.

As per my knowledge, This image is corrept...

You can try to download new image....then again try like 7.3 or 7.5.

Also chekc that Country code on ur WLC should be DE(germany)

Re: Cisco APs not updating after WLC-update

Hello Sandeep,

I attached the LOG-files of several upgrade-failures of one accesspoint. but it is the same log on each AP to the original post.

And in this post... since I didn't find the upload-button...

Re: Cisco APs not updating after WLC-update

Also try this:

Please run the following commands on your WAP:

1.  delete /f /r flash:/c1240-k9w8-mx.124-23c.JA7

2.  clear capwap private

3.  reload

And then try again.

If still fails means that your Image on wlc is correcpted.

Re: Cisco APs not updating after WLC-update

Hello everyone,

here is the result of the TAC I opened:

The third support-member I, was routed to, gave me the hint to try version 7.2.115.2 .

I did update to 7.2.115.2 and everything worked fine. :-)

Complete upgrade-path was:

Start: 6.0.199.4

1.)   1.7.0.0.FUS

2.)   7.0.240.0

3.)   7.2.115.2

4.)   7.4.110.0

5.)   7.4.121.0

6.)   7.6.100.0

His explanation why the APs did the upgrade now was:

"The reason behind this looks to be lying behind the size of the subimages for the AP in the WLC image and the preparation of the AP to accept the larger image. The 7.2.115 image should have a smaller subimage for the AP (remember what I mentioned about the limited size of 16MB on 1242 series APs) than what is being offered by the later releases like 7.4.110 etc. As we already know that the predownload doesn’t work for the 1242 APs , the space on these APs will not be cleared automatically and thus a space crunch will result in corrupt or incomplete subimage being stored. This subimage will not load after the AP boots u and thus the AP would go back to the other image option. Once the AP is booted with the subimage of 7.2.115 , it will also be prepared for the  later releases with larger subimages."

So everything is fine now, except that the APs are not accepting any config-changes from now on (this is what I see with no research done for now)... but that's another story... ;-)

Re: Cisco APs not updating after WLC-update

Just one remark: I did not have to delete anything on the APs manually... :-)

Upgrade was done automatically as it is supposed to.

Cisco APs not updating after WLC-update

I understand.... but like we mentioned before, available flash space is the key.  So now you were able to upgrade the way you wanted, but now the AP's don't really work as you want or maybe a few.  There is no fix for that unless you have no available flash or the AP image is corrupt.

Thanks,

Scott

Agree with scott

1242 AP have limited flash , delete subimages and delete extra files from AP is just a wordaround from us to connect to wlc with higher versiuons but it is alwayas not successfull.

Glad that finally TAC helped you.
