Pix: LAN Failover - Cross-over Cable Won't Fly

At the informational link below - we are informed that when using LAN interfaces for failover link you must go through a switch and not use a cross-over cable between the two pixes in the pair. It does not however explain why this is the case. Does anyone know why a switch must be involved in the picture to make this work?

Cable based failover is used in statefull failover,The importance of switch is that the primary and secodary pixes should be active in the network.
