I've been researching the setup procedures for the Cisco WiSM and I have two quick questions regarding it's setup:
1. In the documentation, it was stated "Create a vlan in the Supervisor 720, this vlan is local to the chassis and is used for
communication between Cisco WiSM and Catalyst Supervisor 720 over a Gigabit interface on
the Supervisor and service-port in the Cisco WiSM."
The word 'local' confuses me a little. Does this mean that it is to be a private vlan or else a vlan that isn't seen elsewhere on the network? Currently I run a vlan for all my management utilities (switches, WLCs, CWS, etc.) so I am curious if I can still use that same VLAN for the service-port on the WiSM or not.
2. In the document there are two IOS versions it explains configuring with. Rather, two ranges; 12.2.18SXF2 to 12.2.18SXF5, and 12.2.18.SXF6.
SXF8 is the most recent 6509 IOS at the moment since I checked last, and I was hoping to get confirmation on if this was supported with the WiSM and if it uses the same setup style of the SXF6 IOS?
We only use WLC's at this point but I have been reading up on WISM's lately as we will likely go that way with our next "Wireless" expansion. Here is my understanding of your two questions;
1. Yes, this is a Private (Local) VLAN -
Create a VLAN in the Supervisor 720. This VLAN is local to the chassis and is used for communication between Cisco WiSM and Catalyst Supervisor 720 over a Gigabit Interface on the Supervisor and a service port in the Cisco WiSM.
Description WiSM Service Port Gateway or Management Interface on CAT6K
ip address 192.168.10.1 255.255.255.0
***Note: There should already be a network management VLAN interface to reach the Cat6k.
2. These were the supported IOS Versions at the time of writing only (later Versions are also supported) -
The information in this document is based on the Cisco WiSM module installed in a Catalyst 6500 Supervisor Engine 720 that runs Native IOS? Version 12.2(18)SXF2,*** but the commands apply to all the IOS versions that support the Supervisor 720 and the WiSM card.
