remote AP dropping - resolved

We have a Cisco 5508 wireless controller with approx 12 local wireless APs (1131 + 1042N) and 7 remote APs (H-Reap).

I have recently added another remote AP but am having issues.

When it is connected to the local network, the wireless controller has no problems finding it and everything is ok, but when plugged into the remote network the wireless controller can see it for less than 5 seconds then it drops off, then about 30 seconds later it appears and then drops again after 5 seconds. This just keeps continuing.

Pinging the wireless AP is constant with no drops.

When plugged into the local network, the AP shows as H-Reap, but on the remote network, shows as local on the controller, however Im thinking this is only because the controller doesnt get to see the AP long enough to get its settings.

I have compared all settings between other remote APs, and compared the settings on the WLan and contoller interface created with other working ones.

Re: remote AP dropping

Have you tried to put it on a different switchport? I have seen this behavior with bad patch cables or bad cable runs. Also look at the switchport and see what the port is negotiating to.

remote AP dropping

I have now tried different cables, running though a cisco switch and also trying different speeds. still not working properly. The unit has worked for 2 years in a different site, i then wiped it and configured for a new one. I have tried to match everything with a current working site.

Re: remote AP dropping

See if the WAP has a crashinfo file/directory present.

Another thing, what switch is the WAP plugged into?  I mean can you provide the model number?

Re: remote AP dropping

switch is a 3750G

how do I check the crashinfo on the WAP?

switch is a 3750G

PERFECT!

Run the following commands:

1.  Command:  test cable tdr interface ;

2.  Wait for about 5 to 7 seconds;

3.  Command:  sh cable tdr interface ; and

4.  Post the output.

I ran twice. After the first results I changed network cable and port, cables have been tested and working.

Nice.  Very, very nice.

Look at your 2nd test.  See Pair C?  This pair controls PoE.  See the result under Pair Status?  This is why your WAP bounces.

Wow.  That's one lousy cable you got.

Re: remote AP dropping

This isnt a PoE switch, Im using a seperate power supply. Previously it was on a PoE switch on a different site.

There are no drop outs on pings.

I have cable tested all cables and used both Cat5e and Cat6 cables.

The only cable tester result our organization will accept (as a standard) is from a Fluke DTX1800.

when i plug the unit into our main network (local) using the same cat6 cable the unit works perfectly.

Re: remote AP dropping

I agree on the tester:) Have you just connect the AP right into the switch to at least eliminate the cable run and the patch on the other end?

AP and switch are plugged directly.

I have tried to eliminate as many variants as possible when moving the AP between the new setup (with issues) and the local network (which works)

According to the "sh logs" and "sh version" the AP is restarting due to power reset.  How is the AP powered?  Power brick or power injector?

After testing, it turns out the issue was a broadband router issue, pings were fine, VPN tunnels fine, but the wireless would  not register with the controller. When router was replaced the wireless registers with the controller.
