Running WLANUI from a PC

Is there a way to install and run the Wireless Management user interface from a PC. I have an 1841 and run SDM 2.5 from a PC but when I choose Wireless Application from the menu it loads and runs it from flash, which is horrendously slow. Also when trying to apply updates, I get HTTP 400 responses in most cases.

Make sure that for the Wireless management you need minimum memory required 13 MB (2,242,560 bytes), in addition to Cisco SDM memory requirements. And also need wlanui.tar file 2.13 MB.

2,242,560 bytes is not 13MB, do you mean 13,631,488 bytes? And 13MB where exactly, I guess you must mean free RAM in the router itself, not flash? My 1841 is as follows:

#sh ver

Cisco 1841 (revision 6.0) with 222208K/39936K bytes of memory.

Processor board ID xxxxxxxxxxx

2 FastEthernet interfaces

1 ATM interface

1 Virtual Private Network (VPN) Module

1 802.11 Radio

DRAM configuration is 64 bits wide with parity disabled.

191K bytes of NVRAM.

62720K bytes of ATA CompactFlash (Read/Write)

#sh mem

Head Total(b) Used(b) Free(b) Lowest(b) Largest(b)

Processor 641A6060 158703520 42145568 116557952 115710732 115361308

I/O ED900000 40894464 4568348 36326116 36197504 36253052

So, what looks to me like bags of free memory there then. Are you suggesting I need to max the thing out at 384MB just to run the wireless GUI interface?

And incase you're refering to free space on the flash card ...

>sh flash

Wanlui.tar is present as you can see and loads, just extremely slowly as the WEB server in IOS appears to extract content for each HTTP request from the tar file afresh. Plenty of free space here too.

SDM can be installed either on a PC so it loads from there instead of running like a dog from flash via the router. I run it from a PC but the wanlui stuff still appears to load from flash.

My question is whether anyone has found a way to install and run the content of wanlui.tar on a PC so it loads from there in the same way as SDM itself. It might then be usable (although the 404's it generates when you try to post updates do not bode well).

A more pointed question might be why after all this time for a router in this market segment, Cisco hasn't replaced this ridiculous bug ridden java rubbish with a decent GUI front end that actually does what it says on the tin. Let's just tell it like it is shall we ...

SDM is complete pants so we all have to resort to reading masses of incoherent PDF files and typing half of war and peace into some god awful 40 year old dumb terminal emulation. Time to pull your finger out guys and get with the 21st century, the competition is leaving you in the dust.
