WCS and Phone mapping

Hi there,

We have a WCS server and a MSE 3300 with 5508 WLC. All together there are 25 APs around the warehouse which support 12 cisco wireless phones. The map seem to show the wrong location of the actual wireless phones, but it shows the right one for iphones and laptops. How can this be?

Is there a calibration tool that I need to run or?

Thank you,

Dmitry

Re: WCS and Phone mapping

There is a claibration you can run from the WCS.  It maybe because the phone are in sleep mode and its showing the last known good location.

Dmitry:

Do the phones use same radio band as other clients? or different band?

Hi Amjad,

The iPhones use different wireless SSID to 7925G but should all be on the same band.

Try then to disable sleep mode on phones and test. It could be just like what Scott mentioned about sleep mode.

I will give that a go, thank you!

This may be off-topic but I was wondering about tracking the devices in a more user-friendly manner. At the moment, it shows the phones by their MAC's and if I switch it to username then it shows nothing at all.

Am I right in thinking that this is because the phones aren't connecting using RADIUS?

WCS and Phone mapping

Exactly. if you have your devices using PSK then no username will be displaied.
The username is displayed if you are using 802.1x authentication with radius.

Take it it's the only way to have them displayed in a more friendly manner?

WCS and Phone mapping

Well, I don't know if there is any other way to display them better.

AFAIK therei s not. But maybe somene with more experience can tell us if that is by anyway possible.

Right,

I have done the calibiration but the map shows the wrong location anyway, if I click on the particular MAC address then it shows in the history its last location which is correct but the map does not show the last location nor the current.

Any ideas why the map isn't updating?

Re: WCS and Phone mapping

If you do a search to track down a mac address is the location wrong or is it when you are just looking at the map in general that the location is wrong.  when you find client on map, that should refresh where the client was detected, but if you just open your map and view all clients, that refreshes i believe every 10 minutes by default.
