What AP models can be converted to LWAPP ?

I have several 1220's with radiomodules MP21G, and also 1231AG with the MP21G radio. Can anyone confirm that they can be converted to LWAPP ?

Hi Johann

Migration from autonomous access point mode to lightweight mode is possible on these Cisco Aironet access point platforms:

- All 1130AG access points

- All 1240 AG access points

- For all IOS-based 1200 series modular access point (1200/1220 Cisco IOS Software Upgrade, 1210 and 1230 AP) platforms, it depends on the radio:

- if 802.11G, MP21G and MP31G are supported

- if 802.11A, RM21A and RM22A are supported

The 1200 series access points can be upgraded with any combination of supported radios: G only, A only, or both G and A.

- All 1310 AG access points

Access points must be running Cisco IOS Release 12.3(7)JA or later before you can perform the upgrade.

So, for your APs you can do the upgrade if you have the minimum IOS version

Hi Johann,

Yes, they can be converted. There are caveats that may prevent successful conversion:

1. Make sure the APs are running 12.3(7)JA or later prior to conversion.

2. Make sure you don't have unsupported A radios installed in the APs. Only the RM21A and RM22A A radios are supported.

3. The conversion tool can be finicky about certain configuration parameters, so it is often simplest to just default the AP configuration prior to conversion.

One other note: The AP1100 series can also be converted to LWAPP, as long as the MP21G is installed. The full list and other references and caveats are at the following URL:
