Core issue

There are two ways to make configuration changes on a PIX Firewall. One method is through the Command Line Interface (CLI), while the other employs Cisco Adaptive Security Device Manager (ASDM). ASDM provides a GUI through which configuration changes can be applied to the PIX.

Note: CLI and ASDM must not be used simultaneously to make changes to the PIX configuration.

Resolution

The installation of ASDM on the secondary PIX does not affect the functionality of PIX failover.

The installation of ASDM on the secondary PIX is beneficial in the event a failover occurs and the primary PIX fails, as ASDM provides monitoring capability. If the primary PIX is down for an extended period of time, use the ASDM GUI to make configuration changes. Configuration changes made through the Command Line Interface (CLI) are available even if ASDM is not installed on the secondary PIX.
