How to do initial configuration on the PIX Firewall

Installing a PIX Firewall requires a thorough knowledge of your company's network topology and security policy. For information on how to create a security policy for you company, refer to Network Security Policy.

For basic preparation of the PIX operating on code 6.x and earlier, refer to the Initial Configuration Checklist section of Establishing Connectivity.

For configuration of PIX operating on code 7.x and later, refer to Cisco Security Appliance CLI Configuration Guide and Sample Configurations.

The are two ways to perform initial configuration for a PIX, using either the Command Line Interface (CLI) or PIX Device Manager (PDM). For CLI configuration, refer to the appropriate version of the Configuration Guide.

To use the PDM, you need to configure the inside IP address using the CLI. The rest of the configuration can be done by referring to the appropriate version of the PDM.
