SSL License behaviour while upgrading the Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) failover pair from version 8.x to 8.3

Question:

What happens to the SSL License while upgrading the Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) failover pair from version 8.x to 8.3 ? Does the license on the failover pair gets combined in Version 8.3 ?

Answer:

Yes. With Adaptive Security Appliance(ASA) version 8.3, the license present in both the ASAs present in the Failover pair will be combined. For example if each ASA(version 8.2 and earlier) has 100 license in the failover pair then the license will get combined and you will have 200  user license to use while ASA runs Version 8.3. If you have 200 user licenses on each ASA, with a combined of 400 user license, and if the ASA platform only supports 350 user license, you are restricted to use only 350 user license.

Refer to Failover Licenses for more information on how the License is been utilized in the ASA failover pair.
