Unable to launch the ASDM after the ASA is upgraded from versions 7.0 to 7.2 and the "The requested URL /admin/index.html was not found on this server" error message appears

Core issue

This issue usually occurs if the software image and the Adaptive Security Device Manager (ASDM) upgrades are not performed in incremental order.

The older versions of the security appliance images do not recognize the new ASDM images, and the new security appliance images do not recognize the old ASDM images. This results in the inability to access the ASDM after an upgrade.

Resolution

In order to resolve this issue, complete these steps:

  1. Download and install the new version 7.2(x) image from Cisco Downloads.

    Note: Refer to Cisco ASA 5500 Series Adaptive Security Appliances Release NotesCisco ASA 5500 Series Adaptive Security Appliances Release Notes for more information on ASA software prior to installation.
       
  2. Reload the device so that it starts with the version 7.2(x) image.
       
  3. Download and install the new ASDM version 5.2(x) image from Cisco Downloads.

    Note:
    Refer to Cisco Adaptive Security Device Manager Release Notes for more information on the ASDM prior to the installation.
       
  4. Enter this command:

    Hostname(config)#asdm image flash:/ asdm file

    This command tells the security appliance where to find the ASDM image.
