How many VPN users can I support using a 512 kbps leased line

I am having a 512Kbps leased line and am using VPN 5000 for connectivity. At present this line carries both data and voice. How many VPN users can I support comfortably without any performance issues?

If none of them are transmitting data, LOTS!

I don't have the performance stats for a 5000, but I think it's a reasonable assumption it won't have an issue with 512kbps of 3des traffic. As for the number of users, you'll have to go back and figure out what type of data these users are transferring.

Your question really has little to do with the fact that you're encrypting it. Just figure out the avg bandwidth requirements of one user and make your calculations. Don't forget to account for protocol (and ipsec) overheads.

1st step : you must define how many voice channel will be used and what data traffic pattern will run in the network (average packet size for every transimission, data type i.e. : text or image, transmission frequency). 2nd step : then calculate your bandwith requirement based on the above data, don't forget to include additional traffic load which is automatically carried by packet overhead and compression technique. 3nd step : cofigure your VPN router interface so it can operate according your data and voice traffic pattern. Good luck

I think you can adjust the committed access rate on most cisco stuff to only allow a certain level of bandwidth for certain apps/protocols/ports. With some tweaking, you should be able to allow enough for voice, and the rest for data.
