DLSW ethernet redundancy for multiple vlans

Can dlsw ethernet redundancy support mutliple vlans with the following configuration?

host dlsw router1 host dlsw router2

| |

local dlsw router 1 local dlsw router2

| |

ethernet switch1-------ethernet switch2

Ethernet switch1 and 2 are supporting multiple vlans and connected to local dlsw router1 and 2 through 802.1Q. SNA support is required for the vlans of ethernet switch1 and 2 .

We found that configuration of dlsw ethernet redundancy is not allowed on the 802.1Q sub-interface of the local dlsw router1 and 2. In this case, how can dlsw ethernet redundancy can be supported for SNA server attached to multiple vlans? Can you provide us some reference / sample for dlsw ethernet redundancy to support SNA servers attached to different vlans in a switch environment.

Thanks.

How about connect the router and the switch by 2 non-trunk links? Then, you enable DLSw ethernet redundancy on both ethernet interface.

There is a document on CCO about DLSw redundancy for ethernet network. The link is as follows:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/customer/697/dlsw_redundant_ethernet.html

Please do not use HSRP as the dlsw peer ID. As far as I know, this is not currently supported by Cisco yet. I am working out why the document is posted on CCO. You can use the extra bridge link for redundancy.

I think you misunderstand my question. You are mentioniong the traditional way of dlsw in handling ethernet redundancy. We handled a lot of that for the past few years without any probelm. My problem is on the new ethernet redundancy feature of dlsw introduced a year ago how it can support multiple vlans. You can refer to the following for new dlsw ethernet redundancy feature:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/tech/tk331/tk336/technologies_configuration_example09186a0080093ecc.shtml

I think that I understand the problem. I am thinking the following:

dlsw local-peer peer-id 2.2.2.2 promiscuous

dlsw transparent switch-support

interface Ethernet0

mac-address 0000.3333.3333

dlsw transparent redundancy-enable 9999.9999.9999 master-priority 10

dlsw transparent map local-mac 0000.6666.0000 remote-mac 0200.eca2.0000 neighbor 0000.5555.5555

!

interface Ethernet1

mac-address 0000.4444.4444

dlsw transparent redundancy-enable 9999.9999.0001 master-priority 10

dlsw transparent map local-mac 0000.6666.0001 remote-mac 0200.eca2.0000 neighbor 0000.7777.7777

Of course, you need an ethernet interface per VLAN. If you need DLSw ER over dot1q interface, please contact the local Cisco Sales Rep or partner. You are not the first one to ask for it. Hope that there is a strong business case to initiate the new feature.

Hi,

Thank you for your information. Do you mena that currently DLSw ER over dot1q interface is not supported no matter on what platform or IOS version? I was told by a local SE that this should be supported by 12.2(6) or later. Is it true? Does Cisco have any plan to add suport of DLSw ER over dot1q interface in future?

Hi,

No platform or IOS version supports DLSw ER over dot1q. The last discussion we had was Aug 2002. At the time, we did not have plan to add the featuer on any platform.

I am sure that DLSW ER over dot1q support in 12.2(6). Normally, we do not add new feature on 12.2 train. We usually add features on 12.2T train. Anyway, 12.2(6) and 12.2(6.4) were built around Nov 2001. Based on the timeline, I am sure that DLSw ER over dot1q support is not added on either 12.2(6) or 12.2(6.4)T.

Please ask your local SE to send me an e-mail @ dixho@cisco.com. I am more than happy to work with him/her.

Hi,

Just want to let you know that DLSw ER over dot1q is going to be supported in 12.2(16) and 12.2(15)T. The code is actually added into 12.2(13.4) and 12.2(13.4)T. The bug for this featurre is CSCdw65810. Not sure if you are able to view CSCdw65810 in CCO.
