Ethernet interface errors

I am receiving errors on the ethernet interface of a 1600 router with IOS 11.2(16)P. I have changed the cable but still the same errors. 'Sho controller eth' is no help. What are the possible causes ? How do I know its the switch or my router ?

Re: Ethernet interface errors

This must be a media problem or a hardware failure. A duplex-mismatch might also be possible. Try to connect the interface to another switch or hub to determine where the problem lies. You can do this temporarily, just to check whether the fault disappears or not.

Re: Ethernet interface errors

There are excessive collison on the ethernet segment. The router backs off its transmission if there is collision. After 15 retries, the router gives up.

The ethernet LAN looks busy. Please check the duplex setting on the switch and on the router. Also, please do a show interface and find out

1. the input and output rate

2. error counters (especially late collision)
