Most NIC manufacturers support a featured called NIC Teaming in either a Load Balancing or Failover configuration.
With Load Balacing, each NIC will transmit traffic, however only one NIC will receive traffic per IP address configured on the server.
With Failover, one NIC is defined as Primary and will transmit/receive all traffic. When that NIC or its link fails, the IP and MAC address will be moved to the other NIC. A gratuitous ARP will be transmitted to inform the switches that the MAC address has moved to a new port.
Hope this helps.
