Need RV042 VPN configuration

Hello

i decide to use my Cisco RV042 router for the VPN connection but i dont know how as i didnt go so deep in networking before .

i have one vpn router which is Cisco RV042 and i need to connect to if from outside the company with laptops w7 and w8.

what the configuration i need to setup in the router and on the user computer?

now i have internet in the router and can connect to internet through it by computer as a test but VPN not working

hope anyone can help me step by step

Hello and thank you for reaching out,

The RV042 supports Quick VPN and PPTP as client VPNs, unfortunately Quick VPN is not supported on Windows 8 and above so you will need to use PPTP for the connection.

Now, before setting up any VPN connections on the router there are a few requirements that need to be in place.

1- Go to http://whatismyip.org/ and write down the IP address you see on the screen 

2- Go to your system summary and look for your WAN 1 IP address, if it is anything different than the address you found on step 1 then you will need to ontact your ISP and ask them to bridge the modem. After they do, check the addresses again and they should match.

3- It is highly recommended for you to change the default IP address of the router on the lan from 192.168.1.1 to any other subnet (192.168.2.1 or 10.0.0.1 for example). This is recommended to prevent issues when people connect from the outside as there will be an issue connecting if the remote user is on the same subnet as the router.

thank you for your reply this was really fast

for the IP i set a static IP from our ISP and i write it in WAN 1 and i connect to the router by a computer and i get internet on it and from there i checked the IP and i find that its same IP as i set inside .

i think everything is ok  till now

the 3rd step you recommended to change the IP of the router , i set it to 192.168.1.19 is this ok? and why it recommended to change it to another range?

Note : My internet is ADSL PPPOE so i use another adsl router (DLINK) to get the internet from the ISP and give it to RV042 as internet not phone line , but the ISP request to disable the DHCP and NAT on the DLINK router in the setup process to complete the setup and get the service

Ok, thank you for the reply.

The reason why I recommended to change the address is because 192.168.1.1 is the most commonly used address out there as most of the brand new devices come preconfigured with it.

The problem is that if someone tries to connect to your router, and their internal network is 192.168.1.X also, then the router will reject the connection.

Now, what you need to change is the subnet, not so much the IP address itself, for example, your subnet right now is still 192.168.1.X, you need to change it to something different, you only need to change the 3rd octet as a minimum, so, for example, if you where to change the IP address of your router to 192.168.50.1 then that will be enough because the subnet will change from 192.168.1.X to 192.168.50.x.
