RV220W Intermittent ping to RV220w lan port connected (new HP) printer

I've got an RV220w in a remote office, with one pc connected and one HP1606DN laser jet printer. (both directly connected to RV220w's LAN ports.)

When I ping -t the printer from the pc, I receive 10+ successful replies, followed by 3-6 request timed out messages.  So the printer seems to have intermittent communication over the network.  When I send +- 10 pages print jobs tot he printer, it errors on 1 or 2 due to the intermittent connection.

To fix the problem, I first tried a new tested cable; this did not fix the problem.

I then installed an older HP laser jet, removing the new, and observed uninterrupted communication. (must be the printer?)

I return to headquarters with the new printer and plug it directly into our RV220w, only to find all is well here.

Anyone have any ideas what could have caused this to begin with.
