ASA 5505 ASDM Won't Run

How can I get the graphical access program (ASDM) working on my computer? I'm running the latest version of Java, is this going to be a problem?

Hello

Do you have any particular problem launching ASDM?

You can either launch it by connecting to the ASA management IP address through a browser, e.g. https://10.80.99.3 (where 10.80.99.3 is the ASA management IP) and follow the instruction through the web interface or you can launch it from your desktop directly.

I'm running ASDM 7.1 on Windows 7 with Java 8 (update 51) with a desktop shortcut configured like this: "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.8.0_51\bin\javaws.exe" -localfile -J-Djnlp.application.href=https://10.80.99.3/admin/public/asdm.jnlp "C:\Users\admin\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\14\66de834e-77b29954"

You also need to add https://[ASA management IP] to the Java security exception site list - see attached screenshot. You can do this through the Java Control Panel.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Martin

It's also worth checking to

It's also worth checking to make sure your IOS and ASDM versions are compatible. If you updated the IOS version on your ASA, but didn't also update ASDM it can break the functionality.  Cisco has a matrix to check: http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/security/asa/compatibility/asamatrx.html#pgfId-121785

Regenerating your default crypto key, with "crypto key generate rsa modulus 1024" may help.
