My name is Rajesh. Currently we require your help in troubleshooting CISCO network switch.

Current Scnario -

Currently in our LAN Network, we need to replace a 48 port Dlink switch with newly procured two 24 port switches.

The specification of existing 48 port Dlink Switch is - D-Link web smart switch DGS-1248T

The specification of two newly procured 24 port CISCO Switches are - CISCO SG- 24-port compact Gigabit switch with 2 Combo Mini-GBIC Port

As per the scheduled downtime, we had replaced the existing D-Link 48 port Ethernet Switch with the new two CISCO 24 port network Switches. But again we had to revert it back to the existing switch as we faced Network Connectivity problem with the new CISCO switches. As per our troubleshooting and analysis we suspect problem with make compatibility issue.

Hence, we require your assistance to resolve this issue.

hello Rajesh,

What exactly are the networking problems you are having?  can you describe the errors or messages?

What else is on your network?

Did you set the switches up, and test before implementing?

I normally start troubleshooting from layer1 up.  so...

Layer1 - physical

Check the physical connection.  You said the switches are Gig, are you using cat5e cables or better?

Do the status lights come on when the device is plugged in?

does the information page on the switch Status and Statistics --> interface show connected?

are you using the fiber gbics? do they match with what is on the other end of the connection?

layer2 -

are there other switches on the network?  is spanning tree turned on all across the network?

is one switch working and one not?

are you using vlans?  are they matching between the router and the switches, and between switches  (untagged/native vlan, and tagged vlans are the same on the uplinks)

layer3 -

Do you have a router on your network? is it providing DHCP?  is dhcp working?

is the router plugged in?  Can you ping it?

What else may have changed when you installed the switches?

Are the switches sg200, sg300 or sg500?  are they doing routing?

is there a default gateway on the clients and the routers allowing outbound.

layer 4

is dns working? can you resolve internet or local names?

can you ping by address

Sorry for all the questions, but more information is needed to troubleshoot.

You can also call into the small business technical assistance center STAC, because you have one year free technical support.

Hope this helps,
