Optical Small Businnes switch???

Hello,

We mount all our new network structure with CISCO ESW 500 Series.

We nedd an optical Switch but not a Catalyst because we don't have the competences to programm all route and VLAN rules. My question is does exist an Optical Switch that use the same web interfaces than ESW 500 Series.

Thanks for your answer.

Re: Optical Small Businnes switch???

Catalyst are not that hard when you use the freely available Cisco Network Aassistant (GUI) to configure the unit.

But my question are ;

  • Why have you mentioned ESW switches, what is your issue with the feature rich lower priced 300 series product.

  • How many optical ports do you need?

  • Are you looking to get a switch with fixed modules or SFP ports?

  • What type of fiber are you using , MM or SM ?

  • what is the maximun distances of the fiber runs ?

  • Is there a requirement for Copper ports within this switch ?

regards Dave

Just in case for your info here are the SFP (miniGBICs) we use for ESW, 300  and other small business switches.

HI

I think Cisoc is Not having SMB Optical  Switches. Cisco is having the Switches with SFP Ports For UPLINK Connectivity. If you required the Optical Switch, please find the below partcode or you need to select the modular core Switches.

8 ports???

There is no Cisco/Linksys SMB switches that supports 8 SFP ports (in a single unit).

The cheapest Cisco Catalyst that can support 8-SFP port (in a single unit) is the venerable WS-C3750G-12S (if you can still buy it).  This model has been superseded by the WS-C3750X-12S.

Re: Optical Small Businnes switch???

Hi

Maybe it's a weakness,  but i love looking at lower priced solutions to achieve a goal.

It would be interesting if you were going for port density to consider a lower priced alternative  to the C3750, which maybe to  look at two WS-C2960S-24PS-L or as an alternative   two WS-C2960S-24TS-L switches,

They each have 4 SFP slots  and can be link aggregated together , or with the use of optional stacking hardware,  stack the two switches together to provide eight available  SFP slots.

These Catalyst switches now offer a tremendous warranty as detailed in their datasheets.

An interesting side note is that with the two 2960s,  you now have some link redunadancy compared to a single switch running eight Gig SFP slots.

stack the two switches together to provide eight available  SFP slots.

Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure.   But look at the downside.  The backplane of the 2960S stacking module is 8 Gbps, half duplex compared to the 3750X which is 32 Gbps, half duplex.

Re: Optical Small Businnes switch???

Hi Leolaohoo,

2960S was as a suggested alternative, and  I really don't see this as a bad alternative to the suggested 3750G-12S-1 series switch, if a Ciaco Partner was thinking about alternative solutions.

FlexStack

Interesting white paper on FlexStack indicates "A single FlexStack connection between two members is a full duplex 10Gbps connecton."  so I am happy to understand why you said 8Gbps half duplex, do you have a reference indicating that value ?

My reference on FlexStack is  http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps6406/white_paper_c11-578928.html

2960-S

It offers a excellent backplace switch switching banwidth at full duplex of;

Switching bandwidth*

176 Gbps

reference: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps6406/product_data_sheet0900aecd80322c0c.html

So 10Gbps stacking speed at full duplex really is pretty darn good between switches. Yep there is a cost involved in using a lower priced stacked solution compared say the 3750G-12S-1.

But keep up your contributions, they are really welcomed.

Sorry.  Getting confused with the numbers.

Re: Optical Small Businnes switch???

HI Thinabadu,

Cisco Catalyst L3 Stackable WS-C3750G-12S-S Swsitch and L2 Stackable WS-C2960S-24TS-L cOAST IS Some Littile bit high compared to Service provider Switches Such as ME-3400G-12CS-A.  In This Switch The Downlink ports are DUal Purpose ports. So you can use Either SFP or Copper. And Along with You will have 4 SFP Uplinks also.Compared to those two this one is Low coast.
