SG300-10 Layer 3 Switch

Im new to the "Layer 3" switches (call me old fashion) i have a few questions about how the 'routing' is administered.

i wanted to know in layer 3, does the switch have to be connected to a router to have internet access or can the L3 Switch just be directly connected to the modem that supplies the internet (in my case cisco DPQ3212 which has one ethernet port) to supply internet to the clients attached to the switch

since its layer 3/ 2 i assume this will work? since a router does the same working in the same layers

so in short what im getting at is am i able to replace a router with a layer 3 switch to connect to the internet? if so it will seriously reduce the downtime of these routers and switches and provide a better output using a layer 3.

thanks for any input!

You cannot replace an internet router with layer 3 switch (You could with an high-end L3 switch, to the tune of thousand of $).

They do different functions, and both are needed.
