Two problems with a single ESW 540-24

We sold an ESW 540 switch to a 3COM customer that is replacing old equipment. This replacement will be on different faces so we have to interconnect some 3COM switches to the Cisco equipment. We are installing rigth now and this two situations:

  • Virtual machines can´t get IP addresses via DHCP (using a different MAC address) when connected to the Cisco switch. Physical machines receive IP addresses from DHCP without problem. This situation never happened with 3COM switches.
  • When we interconect the Cisco Switch to the 3COM switches (not using uplink ports) the connection never goes up. Remembering that 3COM switches are old we fixed the speed to 100 Mbps Full Duplex but it didn't work.

Please help me to configure the Cisco switch,

regards,

jiga.

Two problems with a single ESW 540-24

Hello Juan,

It is possible that both problems could be caused by the same issue. The ESW 500 series uses a smartport wizard. If you would like to test this, log into the ESW and under the main page go to the smartport wizard and change the port to 'Other'.

Often times the default is set to computer, which only allows one MAC address to register on that port. This will stop most switches from passing traffic and in this case will stop a second MAC address from your VM passing traffic.

Dear Robert:

Thanks for your prompt answer and advice.  I'll change the port to "other" and keep you posted with the result.

Hi, the customer finally could change the port and test it.  Now they don´t have problems with multiple IP adresses in the same switch port but the link with the other 3COM switches still doesn't work.  I will visit them tomorrow and will check the configurations  and try the interconnection again.

Hi Juan,

Thanks for the update. When you are there, check to see if you can set the port speed manually. Either on the ESW or the 3COM.
