Field Notice: D9859 R1.0 release aspect ratio conversion and possible downstream issue

This notice is to announce some possible issues with the display output of downstream settop boxes when using the D9859 within certain configurations and with certain settings:

Scenario 1: MPEG4HD to MPEG2HD 16:9

We recently found problems on older settop boxes due to the way the D9859 signals the HD content downstream. Those boxes could end up displaying the content in a letterbox format versus a full scale output which would be expected.

Cisco is working on a maintenance release to solve this specific application by adding the proper signaling so older settops can execute the proper output format.

Scenario 2: MPEG4HD to MPEG2SD

It is advised to avoid the mode “None”, "4:3 P/B", "16:9 Scale" when transcoding from an input stream MPEG4 HD with 16:9 Aspect Ratio to MPEG2 SD

Default mode is “None” on the D9859.

For this scenario, we advise 4:3 CCO, 16:9 LB or 14:9 as a fixed setting.

For D9859, None”, “4:3 P/B” and 16:9 Scale" currently result in letter box display, signaled downstream as 4:3

Note that on the D9858, “None”, "4:3 P/B", "16:9 Scale" resulted in a 16:9 compressed picture, signaled downstream as 4:3

The D9859 Aspect Ratio Conversion options are:

None, Auto, Auto AFD, 16:9 L/B, 4:3 P/B, 14:9, 4:3 CCO, and 16:9 Scale. See D9859 User Manual for full details.

WebGUI setup: change "none" to 4:3 CCO, 16:9 LB or 14:9

Re: Field Notice: D9859 R1.0 release aspect ratio conversion and

Update: D9859 V1.05 has been released which solves most of the issues related to Aspect Ratio.

Please contact TAC for more details.

Software and releasenotes will be posted on soon.

Software link:!y&mdfid=285007629&softwareid=282766520&release=D9859%2001.05.00&os=

With release V1.05:

Scenario 1: MPEG4HD to MPEG2HD 16:9

All reported legacy settop box issues have been resolved with this new release.

Scenario 2: MPEG4HD to MPEG2SD

D9859 behavior has been modified to work like the D9858 transcoder for all HD to SD modes.

Only the "none" mode on the D9859 has one remaining minor remark where the AFD mode identifier is passed on from input to output and is not adjusted for the selected D9859 output mode.
We still advise to use one of the forced modes where possible.

Default mode is “None” on the D9859.
