iSCSI question

Hi,

I have a question about iSCSI & HBAs...

1) an HBA is a nic that uses its own processing power and doesn't use the PC processing power?

2) not sure whether iSCSI uses an HBA or regular nic, can it be used with or without an HBA?

Thanks!

Hi Lisa,

iSCSI can be done in both software (ie: cisco iscsi driver, microsoft iscsi driver etc) or done at a hardware level where you purchase a card which usually has a TCP offload engine (ToE) and offloads the iscsi component as well.

So in short, you can get a iscsi HBA or you can use a software solution.

Cheers

Andrew

and even "cheap" Adapters these day do iSCSI (even booting!) and TCP offload, e.g. ALL intel server PCIe-Ethernet cards...

see

http://www.intel.com/support/network/adapter/pro100/sb/CS-028681.htm

Intel doesn't even offer special adapters anymore since their regular adapters do everything you need...

Regards,

Michael
