Trunk link inactive

grant.maynard
Level 4
Level 4

I have two (new) 9706 with a trunk (multi-VSAN) link between them. Nothing else is connected so all VSANs are inactive.

My question is, would you expect the trunk link to be up or inactive? It is inactive.

Thanks in advance.

Did you try assigning any arbitrary port to one of your inactive VSANs (your 10-13)? Perhaps assigning the ports in the port-channel might work. I see from your recent output/post that the port-channel ports are on VSAN 1.

View solution in original post

Very good ! so the suspended vsan 1 was causing the Problem; now you can proceed with the port channel and everything should be ok !

Have you setup trunk according to

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/storage/san_switches/mds9000/sw/rel_3_x/configuration/guides/fm_3_3_1/trnk.html

Can you please post some more information.

I have this:

version 7.3(1)DY(1)

feature fport-channel-trunk

interface port-channel11
  channel mode active
  switchport mode E
  switchport trunk allowed vsan 10-13
  switchport description san-coresw-09
  switchport rate-mode dedicated

interface fc1/3
  switchport description san-coresw-09 fc1/3
  channel-group 11 force
  no shutdown

Please provide the output of the following commands

mds9706-a1# show port-channel compatibility-parameters
Parameters that have to be consistent across all members in a port-channel.

1. physical port layer

Members must have the same interface type, such as fibre channel, ethernet
or fcip.

2. port mode

Members must have the same port mode configured, either E,F or AUTO. If
they are configured in AUTO port mode, they have to negotiate E or F mode
when they come up. If a member negotiates a different mode, it will be
suspended.

3. trunk mode

Members must have the same trunk mode configured. If they are configured in
AUTO trunking mode, they have to negotiate the same trunking mode when they
come up. If a member negotiates a different mode, it will be suspended.

4. speed

Members must have the same speed configured. If they are configured in AUTO

speed, they have to negotiate the same speed when they come up. If a member
negotiates a different speed, it will be suspended.

5. MTU

Members have to have the same MTU configured. This only applies to ethernet
port-channel.

6. ethernet port index

This only applies to ethernet port-channel. Each ethernet port-channel
could only have two ethernet ports. They must be in the same slot, their
port indeces must be adjacent and the lower number must be odd. Example:
Gigabitethernet 8/5 - 6.

7. rate mode

Members must have the same rate mode configured. Rate Mode applies only to
isola FC ports

8. Maximum Speed Mismatch

Members must be configured to auto-negotiate to the same maximum speed.

9. Resources Unavailable

Members must be able to acquire resources required to maintain
compatibility. Check shared resources like speed, rate-mode and port mode.

10. Out of Service

Members must be in-service.

11. MEDIUM

Members have to have the same medium type configured. This only applies to
ethernet port-channel.

port will be error disabled

22. physical port layer

Members must have the same interface type, such as fibre channel, ethernet
or fcip.ILC ports cant be part of bundle

23. port mode

Members must have the same port mode configured, either E,F or AUTO. If

they are configured in AUTO port mode, they have to negotiate E or F mode
when they come up. If a member negotiates a different mode, it will be
suspended.

Do you have fibre optic cables connected between the 2 MDS ?

I see that all fc interfaces are down !

can you please enable them all

Conf t

Interface fc 1/3

no shut

This is MM fibre, 16G.

Physical interface is enabled - does Port-Channel need to be too?

Config is:

interface port-channel11
  channel mode active
  switchport mode E
  switchport trunk allowed vsan 10-13
  switchport description san-coresw-09
  switchport rate-mode dedicated

interface fc1/3
  switchport description san-coresw-09 fc1/3
  channel-group 11 force
  no shutdown

Yes, you Need to "no shut" the port channel as well

Just tried that, it hasn't helped.

We have mds9706-a1 ---- TE link ----- mds9706-a2.

It seems like a chick-and-egg situation - the trunk link carries 4 VSANs which are all inactive because no devices are connected, and this makes the trunk link inactive. But if the trunk link was up then the VSANs would be up?

Can you spoof an interface up like in ethernet world (no keepalive)?

After having turned on pc, try to shut / unshut each interface !

Do you see any Errors: show logging log

If this doesn't help delete the pc, and see if the fc links are working or not.

No luck - removed from port-channel with shut/no shut - physical link is still inactive.

If all VSANs are inactive, would you expect the TE to be inactive too?

Can i somehow spoof a VSAN to be up?

Thanks for your persistence!

Did you try assigning any arbitrary port to one of your inactive VSANs (your 10-13)? Perhaps assigning the ports in the port-channel might work. I see from your recent output/post that the port-channel ports are on VSAN 1.

Your ports are in vsan 1, most likely vsan 1 is suspended !

Create a new vsan different from 1, and put all your PC interface and PC member interface into this vsan

Using vsan 1 is not recommended and not best practise; any unused interface by default is in vsan 1. Therefore a "show vsan database Membership"  would show you any free interfaces in vsan 1

We weren't going to use vsan 1 and had "vsan 1 suspend" under the vsan database.

I took the physical (fc1/3) out of the port-channel and assigned it to one of the trunked vsans and it looks like the link has come up:

Very good ! so the suspended vsan 1 was causing the Problem; now you can proceed with the port channel and everything should be ok !
