Hi
we have had an issue with a 6506 box (with SUP2) - it was reloading every 15 minutes or so, until we shut down an interface with a lot of BGP peers on it (I mean a lot). After that the switch has become stable. We have been trying to identify what may have caused the condition.
Sh ver shows this:
System returned to ROM by power-on (SP by error - a Software forced crash, PC 0x4012533C)
I have run sh tech through the output interpriter and it did not come back with anything specific really.
Could it be CPU overload?

From your description, it sounds more like a memory leak. IOS is definitely the suspect here.

I think you might be right actually
this is what I have found after a I had had another a better look at it:
WARNING: The following processes are currently holding more than 1 MB of memory
with 'Freed' memory less that 'Holding' memory:
'IP RIB Update' (Holding 51971248 bytes)
'BGP Router' (Holding 149072156 bytes)
This is considered to be high. High memory usage can be normal, or can indicate
a memory leak. To determine this, it is important to see if memory usage changes
over time.
At the moment (and that's with most of the BGP peers shut down) we have just under half of the memory left free.
What would be the best way forward then - upgrading IOS? Or supervisor?
Our IOS is c6sup22-psv-mz.121-20.E3.bin and the sup is Sup2

For your platform, the latest is: c6sup22-psv-mz.121-27b.E3.bin
Ram: 128Mb
Flash: 32Mb
This is a lot newer than what you have now.
Upgrade the IOS for a start, that is the easiest way forward and it costs considearbly less.
If you have sufficient funds available, you can always upgrade the supervisor afterwards but i can see no particular reason why the hardware should be the bottleneck here.

Leo

Thank you Leo
One thing though - does this release have BGP?

I have selected an image with the same name as what you have now: C6000 Supervisor 2 with MSFC2 & PFC2, Service Provider with VIP.
This will have the same features as what you are currently running.

Leo
