I want to set up a DID number that users can call from outside, enter an extension and leave a voice mail. Rather than calling an extension, letting it ring until voice mail picks up. Internally, we dial * and the extension to go direclty to someone's voice mail.

Leann,
Route the call to a call handler and by default it will allow users to enter extensions to be transferred to. If you don't want it to ring 4x after the transfer off the call handler, you can change the behavior on the subscriber's call transfer settings to go directly to greeting.
Hope that helps,
Brad

This seems to work well. Will having your call transfer settings set to 'go directly to greeting' affect anything other than transfer calls from unity? I've done some brief testing and it doesn't seem to affect anything else.

If the outside caller uses the Directory to spell by name, and makes a match, it goes directly to the subscribers greeting, not ring their phone.

Any transfer to that subscriber will go directly to their greeting every time, and won't ring, that's all there is to be aware of.

There is no way to do this other than use the "To leave a message for the person you wish to call, enter in the 4 digit mailbox follow by #2"
This will go directly to their greeting and they can listen to their greeting, follow by leaving a message.
The transfer rule in Unity does not allow either both transfer. It's either try the extension, or go directly to the greeting.
Another way to do this is to change the transfer rule to go to greeting directly, rather than ring the extension. So if an outside caller hit the Corp Directory, they type John in for John Doe, go directly to greeting. (or dial the 4 digit extension.)
The subscriber would need to have a caller input setup for an Alternate contact number so it could then be transferred to their desk if they wish.
For example: "Hi this is john, leave a message or press 1 to try my desk phone" One would be programmed in as Alternate Extension, the subscriber would program their desk phone, cell phone whatever.

Will this work if the person has their deskphone forwarded to their cell phone. A mananger wants to call in and leave himself a message, even when his desk phone is forwarded.

If the deskphone is on foward to the cell, the deskphone will automatically forward to the cell, bypassing Unity all together.
