Configure Fax over IP

Hello,

I have been asked to setup our fax machines to using FOIP.

I wanted to know someone can help me to understand how I can setup fax services using Cisco callmanager.  I have never done this before and any assistance would be greatly appreciated.  please let me know what information I can provide.

If you have step-by-step directions, that would be ideal.

Thank you all.

Sure Jason, I'll try to help.

What's the plan about connecting FAX machines ? Will they be connected through ATA or directly on FXS port of gateway router ?

Will there be any FAX Server involved in the setup ?

What is the complete CUCM version ?

GP.

GP,

The fax machines will be connecting directly on the FXS port of the gateway.  There are not fax servers and the current version of CUCM is:

Cisco Unified CM Administration System version: 7.1.5.20000-6

At the moment, all the PCs get an IP from the Cisco 7965 phones (1 wire from port to phone and 2nd wire from phone to PC) and we would like the same for the fax machines.

Please let me know if there is anything else you need.

Thank you,

JA

Jason,

Thanks for full details. Check out http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/gatecont/ps514/products_configuration_example09186a00800d698e.shtml#task2

which has configuration steps needed to enable Fax over IP ( FOIP ) with/without ATA.

For more information on FOIP, refer http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios/12_2/voice/configuration/guide/vvffax.html

GP,

I read through the links, but I am still confused.  I have never done a setup like this before.  The gateway that we have is a Cisco 3845, see attached pic.  Not sure what else i can provide, I need to know how I can setup my fax machines to get IPs from cisco callmanager.  I am able to enter the mac addresses into callmanager, but the fax machines do not get an IP even though they are setup with DHCP.

Thanks again for the help.

The FXS ports ( to which FAX machines will be connected ), will be registered to CUCM & a DN needs to be assigned to those ports. DN will be the identity for individual fax machines.

GP.

I have tried selecting 1/0 and selecting POTS as the port type, but I do not get an IP from call manager.  I have specified the DN, bit for some reason the FXS ports do not get registed with call manager.

Any thing I am doing wrong?

on the gateway router, have you configured those FXS ports with MGCP ?

Pls post the gateway running config, if you dont mind.

GP.

GP,

sorry for the late response, here is the running config for the gateway.  Also I am not able to get an IP for this gateway from the call manager.  I have DHCP enabled and set the VLAN id to the one that the phones use.

NP Jason. What are voice-port 2/0.....2/23 ?

As per the CUCM MGCP Gateway config screenshot attached earlier on this thread, your FXS ports should be 1/0....1/7.

If 2/0 are the FXS ports, then correct your CUCM gateway config & make sure they appear 2/0 & so on there too ( not 1/0....1/7 )

About the command under FXS port, pls add " application mgcpapp " & then do " no mgcp " & " mgcp " from gateway router CLI.

Lemme know how it goes.
