CUCM 8.6 VMware Tools Upgrade Issue

M TORCH
Level 1
Level 1

We are having an issue after upgrading the VM Tools on our CUCM 8.6.23900-10 servers. The upgrade goes according to plan as documented in the administration guide but after reboot the tools do not start.

The only indication of what the problem could be is seen during the OS load where the following message is logged:

vmware tools is installed, but it has not been (correctly) configured for the running kernel. To (re-)configure it, invoke the following command /usr/bin/vmware-config-tools.pl

Attempts to run the tools installation again fails as CUCM sees that the version installed matches the version on the ISO.

Any ideas on how to uninstall and reinstall or to run the script to configure the tools for the kernel?

Thank you

Mike

Hi Mike,

The following bug may be the culprit

https://tools.cisco.com/bugsearch/bug/CSCue38229/?reffering_site=dumpcr

Unable to install VMWare Tools on CUCM in FIPS mode
CSCue38229
Symptom:
VMWare Tools installation on CUCM will fail with the error "VWWare Tools is installed, but it has not been (correctly) configured for this running kernel."
Conditions:
FIPS mode is enabled.
Workaround:
Disable FIPS mode and perform the installation again.

Manish,

Thank you for the reply.  Do you happen to know what the consequences of disabling FIPS would have on our certificates?  We are currently running in cluster security mixed mode.

Mike

Mike,

I would suggest checking this with TAC, i don't want to provide any iffy information on certificates as it has the potential to cause major outages in a secure cluster.

Manish

Update - The issue was resolved when we upgraded the cluster to version 8.6.2.24900-17 which was to resolve an issue with CDR files not being processed correctly due to FIPS being enabled.
