CUMA :- Can I skip MS-Exchange ?

I am totally new to Cisco's Mobility offerings.

My aim is to have Mobile Communicator on a mobile device, working with CUCM 7.0

I gather that I need

1. Server running CUMC 7.0

2. Server running CUMA

3. Win 2000/3 Active Directory

4. ASA for proxy functionality

5. OPTIONAL :- Unity / Unity Connection

And for certain directory lookup features, I also need

6. MS-Exchange !!

My question is :-

Although stated as "REQUIRED" for all deployments would it be possible to run Mobile Communicator, and have limited fuctionality without running Exchange ?

Or is it a necessary and integral part of the deployment ??

Thanks

Exchange is required to deploy CUMA. Exchange serves the user's personal contacts, as well as calendar appointments. CUMA cannot be deployed with Exchange.
