Notify Presence Support?

Hi,

Can anyone explain to me what Notify Presence Support (Phone provides SIP and SCCP Presence to Cisco Unified Presence) in the Cisco Unified Presence IP Phone Support Feature table at the link below means?

Does this mean that Presence users can view the status of user phones even if that user is not running a software presence client (CUPC) or the IP Phone Messenger XML service?

That is correct.

The power of a Presence server (CUPS) is it can subscribe and compose presence information even the client (CUPC/IPPM) was not running.

Can I clarify a couple of other points?

I assume that the IP phones have to be associated with a CUCM user who is also defined as a CUPS users?

Is the phone presence a simple on-hook/off-hook or does it support other states (e.g. Away if the phone has not been used for an extended period)?

Can the phone presence status be shared to a federated OCS 2007 system to allow CUCIMOC users to view the presence status of IP phones?

It's simply on-hook/off-hook.  And yes, you need to assoicate the line apperance with a CUCM end user.

Technically, you may federate with OCS.  But it only support "inter-domain" federation right now.  So you'll have two set of users - one set for CUCM and one set for OCS.  I haven't done this.  But I think you would have two entries for each contact like "John Doe - OCS" and "John Doe - CUCM" on the contact list, which kind of confusing and ugly.

The other way is to do MOC RCC or CUCIMOC.  But they'll require MOC client running to publish phone presence.

Thanks once again.

Can you think of any scenarios where it would make sense to deploy both CUPS and OCS within the same organisation?

I guess if some users do not have PCs then they could be configured as CUPS phone users but I am struggling to see who would have a job where they would stay next to one phone and not use a PC!

Usually, people deploy OCS and CUPS together because they want to use MOC RCC (Remote Call Control) feature.  CUPS acts as a translation gateway to translate between CSTA and CTI/QBE protocols.

CME (CallManager Express) can handle CSTA directly.  CUCM (CallManager) cannot.  That's why we needs CUPS.

Other than that, I couldn't think of a reason why people would want OCS and CUPS side by side.
