Does the system offer the ability to listen to a message then place an outbound call to contact the person who left the message, for example, and then upon completion of that call get back into voice mail at the point you left off with the last message retrieved?
No, there's no ability to leave unity "in the wings" like that while you make another call. Unity can do return call to subscriber and does offer the "dropped call recovery" feature which is close to what you want. It does a release transfer to the subscriber (who lefe you the message) and when you're done you can call back into your mailbox (provided you come back in a reasonable time - which is adjustable) and it'll offer to take you to the last message in your stack you were on when the call terminated. Not quite the same thing but close.
