Unity intergration with Nortel via QSIG

Hi I am trying to intergrate Unity for voice mail into Nortel via QISG. We have the QSIG link uo and get all caller name display etc but we cant get the voice mail going. Is there and Nortel configuration examples of how this is achieved.

Thanks in advance

If you just put Unity, did you have an old Vmail server before? After 4 rings, your Nortel phone should roll the the Unity Pilot number for it's ports. If you have 8 ports on Unity linked with a Dialogic card (for example) those 8 ports should be in a hunt group with a pilot number. For this example, let's say 8400.

after 4 rings on the nortel phone, the pbx pulls the call back and redirects it to the 8400 hunt group. The 8400 rings one of the 8 ports on Unity. Unity will take the call, then send out an MWI request. The QISQ signally is needed to push that MWI request to the remote T1 line. (assuming this how you have it setup)

The PIMG device will also work.

Re: Unity intergration with Nortel via QSIG

Couple of things:

What do you hear from Unity when a Nortel call FDNs or hunts to Unity?

What release are you running on the Nortel? If running Succession 3.0 you will need all of the latest and greatest PEPs from Nortel relating to QSIG.

Check the Call Viewer in Unity. Make sure you are recieving the correct Forwarding Station info when a call FDNs or Hunts from the Nortel to the Unity.

You will need at a minimum Call Manager Release 4.1.3(sr1) to light MWIs at multiple sites if you are doing a centralized solution.

Hope this helps.

Re: Unity intergration with Nortel via QSIG

From understanding is that IF you have a PTP and Nortel phones on the other side or another nortel switch, you can centralize the voicemail no problem. The problem is when Unity tries to turn the MWI light. Nortel uses the QSIG protcol and one channel on the straight T1 line to communicate. This would also mean, the router (if you are using Cisco) must support QSIG also. Break down:

Unity takes a message at site A for a phone at Site B:

Unity sends out an MWI back to that ext at Site B:

the command heads through the router as a QSIG command. The router at Site B recieves the packet from the QSIG and fowards it to the local Nortel PBX switch, which then turns the light on the phone at site B.

unless i'm completely off.....

Re: Unity intergration with Nortel via QSIG

How it works for us is:

Unity takes a message at site A for a phone at Site B

Unity sends out an MWI back to that ext at Site B but there is a lot going on in the background:

The MWI request hits the Call Manager which sends out the MWI request as a QSIG supplementry message to turn on or off the MWI.

The Call Manager must be set up correctly to support this under Call Manager Services see:

Multiple Tenant MWI Modes

Message Waiting Indicator APDU Digit Translation CSS

Based on the digit manipulation done by the route pattern or translation pattern asociated with the Message Waiting Indicator APDU Digit Translation CSS

a QSIG message is sent to the appropriate gateway router which is backhauling the associated PBX QSIG D-channel back to the Call Manager.

The Nortel PBX must see the proper Directory Number address to turn on/off the MWI. For instance our Nortel's must see the primary 4 digit Directory Number.

Please note -This took a lot of time in the lab to get it to work in our enviroment.

Re: Unity intergration with Nortel via QSIG

How can you tell if you are sending MWI to the Nortel? Is there a way of verifieing that we are sending it ie a debug? I have run a debug on Call Manager and the router but I can't see that we are sending it.

Re: Unity intergration with Nortel via QSIG

We are sending MWI to the Nortel. On the road this week and not sure what traces to turn on in Call Manager. On the router use "Debug isdn q931" in the PBX to turn on D-Channel monitor in Load 96 of inbound and outbound DCH messages:

ENL MSGI DCH x

ENL MSGO DCH x

were x is the D-CH to the router. Do not use on a busy DCH or it will be hard to turn off.

To turn off use:

DIS MSGI DCH x

DIS MSGO DCH x

Re: Unity intergration with Nortel via QSIG

Yer we are running Nortel Succession 3.0, not sure of the PEPs I will check. As for Call Manager we are running 4.1.3(sr2).

What PEPs did you have installed?

Re: Unity intergration with Nortel via QSIG

We have the latest Nortel Deplist installed at each PBX. A Deplist is the latest and greatest collection of patches appropriate to your system hardware/software and the associted Nortel applications you are using.
