You shouldnt need to do either.  You can upgrade directly to 7.1 from 6.1.  I believe you need to be on 6.1(3b)SU1 at a minimum - so read the release notes for 7.1 and find out what versions are supported for direct upgrade.

Hi Yancy,

I'm just going to add some further notes to the good tips from Hailey (+5 my friend!)

You will need to take a step back and do your "due diligence" before moving ahead with this upgrade. You need to check the CUCM upgrade compatibility, the server support for this version, you will need a Software Feature License for 6.x to 7.x, you'll want to make sure your IP Phones are at a release that will move forward to 8.5(3) (7941/61, 7942/62, 7945/65). there are probably some other considerations as well that I'm missing right now (think Friday night Don't just jump in with both feet!

These documents/Links below are sometimes over-looked but contain significant UC upgrade Paths/strategies/recommendations. There is alot of info to weed through but will certainly save you from "taking it on the chin".

Just to add a clarification note I believe it's missing:

a) backups/restores are in the EXACT SAME VERSION. This includes any SR or ES you might have. So restoring a 6.X into a 7.X install is just not possible.

b) DMA is exclusively for Windows to Linux migrations. There is no migration tool as such between CUCM versions running over Linux. At most you could use BAT with the restrictions and changes you might need to perform between versions.

The whole upgrade process has already been covered by Rob and Hailey but just for you to get your ideas straight.
