upgrade unity to w2003

Unity 4.21. W2K. External message storage E2K. Now we are planning to upgrade the system to 2003, exchange may be upgrade to e2003 too. My question is, can we do an inbox upgrade? Is there a Cisco link outline the recommendation and procedure?

Re: upgrade unity to w2003

You can do an inplace upgrade for Exchange, but you CAN NOT do an inplace upgrade of the OS. It is recommended you backup the Unity server using DIRT. Use the Platform discs to reinstall the system from scratch to Unity 4.2.1 Then use DIRT to restore the system.

Hope this helps.

Re: upgrade unity to w2003

To add to Tommer's post (and rating), here's the documentation reference:

The Reconfiguration and Upgrade Guide for Cisco Unity Release 5.x (With Microsoft Exchange) has a chapter titled Replacing or Converting a Cisco Unity 5.x Server, or Upgrading to Windows 2003:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/unity/5x/upgrade/guide/ex/5xcuruge150.html#wpxref26411

Note this important callout which Tommer pointed out:

Windows Server 2003 is supported on the Cisco Unity server only with Cisco Unity version 4.0(4) and later. Upgrading from Windows 2000 to Windows Server 2003 is not supported when any additional software has been installed on the server (for example, SQL Server 2000 or MSDE 2000, or Cisco Unity). Upgrading to Windows Server 2003 on an existing Cisco Unity server is supported only when you back up Cisco Unity data by using the Cisco Unity Disaster Recovery Backup tool, reinstall all software on the Cisco Unity server, and restore Cisco Unity data by using the Cisco Unity Disaster Recovery Restore tool.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Michael.

Thanks Michael and Tom

One more question about exchange server os upgrade. If the offbox exchange server is running w2k, can we do inbox upgrade from w2k to w2003?

Re: upgrade unity to w2003

Yes. You can have the Unity server running Win2003, and the offbox Exchange server running Exchange 2000. See references below:

Software Requirements for Cisco Unity Server version 4.2

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/unity/42/requirements/42cusysreq.html#wp471645

•A supported version of Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or Windows 2000 Server:

-Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition (requires Exchange Server 2003 as the message store)

-Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition (requires Exchange Server 2003 as the message store)

-Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition (requires Exchange Server 2003 as the message store)

-Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition (requires Exchange Server 2003 as the message store)

-Windows 2000 Server

-Windows 2000 Advanced Server

Exchange Requirements for Message Store - Unity 4.2

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/unity/42/requirements/42cusysreq.html#wp472166

Exchange as the message store is supported in the following Cisco Unity 4.2 configurations, with the required software listed below:

Unified Messaging

•Exchange 2003 on a separate server

•Exchange 2000 on a separate server

Hope this helps.

Re: upgrade unity to w2003

Since my last post regarding your question on whether the Unity server running Windows 2003 can be homed to an Exchange server running Exchange 2000, I've rechecked the documentation and wish to provide this update.

It has been clarified in CSCso20392 that even though the System Requirement documents may leave room for interpretation of such support, the Installation Guides are explicit that this is not supported. Specifically, the 'Setting up Exchange' sections of Installation Guides for unity 4.x and 5.x state as follows:

"When Windows Server 2003 is installed on the Cisco Unity server, you must use an Exchange 2007 or Exchange 2003 server as the partner server."

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/unity/5x/installation/guide/umexnofo/5xcuigumenofo060.html#wp1938941

So it seems as though you won't be able to postpone the upgrade of Exchange if you plan to upgrade the Unity server to 2003.

Hopefully this clarifies your last question.

Regards,

Michael.
