Upgrading CUCM/CUC 8.5.1(SU1) to 8.6(2a). Use COP file version 1.0 or 1.1?

Hello,

The release notes for 8.6(2a) state that you need to install ciscocm.refresh_upgrade_v1.0.cop.sgn on 8.5.1(x) before upgrading to 8.6.2a.  See documentation here:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/rel_notes/8_6_2/cucm-rel_notes-862a.html#wp1971086

However, there is a ciscocm.refresh_upgrade_v1.1.cop.sgn available now for download on CCO.  Should I install ciscocm.refresh_upgrade_v1.0.cop.sgn or ciscocm.refresh_upgrade_v1.1.cop.sgn, maybe the release notes haven't been updated since version 1.1 was released?

Link to COP files 1.0 and 1.1 on CCO:

http://www.cisco.com/cisco/software/release.html?mdfid=283782839&release=COP-Files&relind=AVAILABLE&softwareid=282204704&rellifecycle=&reltype=latest

Which version of the COP file do I need to install on 8.5.1(SU1) before upgrading to 8.6(2a)?

Also, do I need to reboot the CUCM/CUC server after installing the COP file?  The release notes aren't clear on this.

Thanks!

Re: Upgrading CUCM/CUC 8.5.1(SU1) to 8.6(2a). Use COP file vers

Hi Brian,

Well, the good news here is that you can use either .cop file as the v1.1

just adds some enhancements as nicely detailed by Ryan from Cisco

in the attached .pdf. This version is the Phase 2 (of 3) files for the refresh upgrade

procedure.

Here are the install notes;

Installation Instructions

File Name: ciscocm.refresh_upgrade_v1.1.cop.sgn

MD5 Sum: b295f4e56c9fb93856b71b05b7a65456

*** The patch installation should be done off hours during a maintenance window because there is a slight risk that installation during normal business hours could temporarily impact system performance.  The patch installation should occur when there is no other CLI or GUI activity on the system since the patch will terminate all CLI and GUI sessions and restart the Tomcat service. ***

  1. Install this file on all nodes in the cluster from the "Install/Upgrade"      option under "Cisco Unified Communications Operating System      Administration."
  2. Once patch is successfully installed, allow the system      a few minutes for the Tomcat service to completely restart before proceeding      with the Refresh Upgrade and for the CLI command “show version active” to      display the results correctly.

*** Some ES and SU versions have all the changes delivered by this patch.  If that’s the case, the patch install will fail with an indication that the current version already contains the necessary changes to support a successful Refresh Upgrade to 8.6(x). ***

*** No reboot, restart of the system or restart of any services is required after the patch has been installed.  The GUI or CLI will indicate that a system reboot is required.  For this patch file only, that message can be disregarded. ***

*** If upgrading from a 6.1(4) or 6.1(5) or 7.1(3) version to an 8.6(x) UNRESTRICTED version, only this patch is required.  It is NOT necessary to also install the ciscocm.allow_upgrades_to_unrestricted.cop.sgn patch.***

*** Once this patch is installed, the email notification feature presented on the GUI and CLI will only be fully functional if upgrading to 8.6(x) release.  It will not be fully functional if installing another COP file or upgrading (L2) to an 8.5(x) or earlier release.  ***

Cheers!

Rob

Upgrading CUCM/CUC 8.5.1(SU1) to 8.6(2a). Use COP file version

Hi,

if i install 8.6(2a) from 8.5 is there a downtime installing this on the inactive partition? Conerning page 2 and page 9 from the PDF from Rob:

-Phase 2: System reboots, installs rhel5, reboots, and install applications

This is a Refresh Upgrade require an extended service outage and multiple reboots. Please refer to the Software Upgrades section of the Cisco Unified Communications Administration Guide for more information

Thanks in advance.

Ok, i think i answered it by myself. :-)

When  you install 8.6 upgrade software, there will be a temporary server  outage while the CUCM software is installed. Once you kick off the  upgrade using either the command line or graphical user interface the  data will be exported, and the system will be automatically rebooted at  which point the server outage will begin. The duration of this outage  will depend on your configuration and amount of data. During the  upgrade, progress can be monitored via the console until such time that  command line interface and graphical user interface access has been  restored. Once restored, you can use the command line interface or  graphical user interface to continue to monitor upgrade progress.

If i`m wrong please revised me. :-)

Hi Thorstenn,

You are most correct my friend

The refresh upgrade to 8.6(x) will require a longer than normal

maintenance window due to the number of reboots etc. There

is no way around this.

Cheers!
