B440 M2 SLES 11sp3 boot fom SAN fails with "gruber hard disk error" on NetApp FAS3240 lun

Hello, Gurus

I'm doing POC for Customer trying to deploy SAP.  Trying B440M2 2x VIC1280 boot directly from NetApp 3240 via FC.

Prepared 450GB lun 0 on FAS3240, mapped it OK. In UCS service profile for B440M2 created boot policy to boot from lun 0.

Installation GUI SLES 4 SAP 11 SP3 from ISO detected lun 0 fine, installation gone fine, but, when system goes to reboot from disk it won't boot

with just "grub hard disk error". UCSM 2.2.1(d).

Is it working config ? Or, smth should be done to make B440 boot SLES from lun 0 with OS just installed.

Rgds, Yuri

When your installation detects the lun, and installs ok, it means, that FC zoning, and lun mapping/masking is ok.

Boot fails: something might be wrong with your boot policy ?

Can you please post your boot policy ? and the vhba's of your SP ?

Btw.

- is this classical SAP or HANA ?

- did you check

Installing Linux on a Bootable SAN LUN

This section describes how to install Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) or SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) on a bootable SAN LUN logical disk or RAID volume using Cisco UCS Manager GUI and the KVM Console.

Wdey, ur right ! Found wrong lun id in the boot policy (BP).

Was 0 in BP, 4 in NetApp.

What I did:

- Changed LUN id to 0 on NetApp.

- Correctly interpreted Steps 5 & 6 of http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/unified_computing/ucs/os-install-guides/linux/b_B-Series_Linux_Install.pdf

just adding boot:linux pci=nomsi mpath into Boot section at the bottom of SLES ISO graph starting screen.

- Executed installation

The server installed and booted off the NetApp Lun JUST FINE !

Thanks, Wdey
