I found the supported RAID options for my chassis at the link below but I have a silly question. Can I order LSI-branded RAID controllers direct from disti or must I order the Cisco-branded equivalents? Are they the same aside from the name on the box? Will Cisco support non-Cisco-branded RAID controllers as long as they're from the list below? I'm not asking Cisco to replace a third-party controller, just hoping they'll stand by it as otherwise openly interoperable with their servers.

Same goes for the RAM and other stuff - are Cisco SKUs required or can we source hardware from elsewhere as long as it's from the supported list?

Phil,
What I can say about this is that as long as the part ID is the same, it will be supported, if it is not a Cisco qualified part and there is an issue, Cisco TAC will ask you to remove that part and use a Cisco qualified part before continuing with any troubleshooting.
I hope that helps clarify, if there are more questions, I will be at your service.

Thanks Keny. I guess asking the differences between a Cisco-branded "Cisco LSI MegaRAID 9240-8i SAS Controller" and a plain LSI-branded "LSI Logic MegaRAID 9240-8i 8-port SAS RAID Controller" would be out of bounds?

Phil,
I get your point. If we see that from Cisco's perspective, the Cisco-branded Part ID will be a part that would have complied with the rigorous QA testing, while the other, STILL compatible since they are the same part, will not be a PID tested by us.
From a customer's perspective and like a user that I am, I agree with you, so keeping in mind your "Disclaimer" that should work just fine

Hi Phil,
With regards to the LSI controller, it is recommended that you order them from Cisco since it will come with a firmware which will be compatible with your server. I have seeing cases where customers get these controllers with a very old version of firmware and the server can't recognize these adapters, and it is not possible to upgrade them via the Cisco HUU iso.
Same goes for memory modules, if the FRU id is not part of the capability catalog you will get errors where these modules get disable.
What is UCS manager capability catalog?
