UCS C240 M3 power supply choice

The UCS C240 M3 server has 2 available power supply options, 650W or 1200W.  However, I cannot find any documentation about what configurations of the server would require larger power supplies.  Anyone have any idea about this?

There's nothing about it in the C240 tech specs either, which is the best doc I've found on the C240:
