- Can the Cisco 7985 phone (or other models) be used for VideoConferencing, or does it not support the required Codec's?
- Can you all elaborate on the concrete distinctions between Video/Web Conferencing and TelePresence? So far, to me, it seems to be a Marketing distinction, but not quite yet a real differentiation or standard. It more seems that Telepresence is "enhanced and feature added" Video/Web Conferencing.
Yes you can used for VideoConferencing with Cisco 7985 phone . But you would need an MCU to support multipoint conferences. In this scenario, the 7985 would only support one simultaneous endpoint. You cannot display multiple video streams simultaneously on the 7985.
Web conferencing is used to conduct live meetings or presentations over the Internet. In a web conference, each participant sits at his or her own computer and is connected to other participants via the internet. This can be either a downloaded application on each of the attendees computers or a web-based application where the attendees will simply enter a URL (website address) to enter the conference.
A videoconference (also known as a videoteleconference) is a set of interactive telecommunication technologies which allow two or more locations to interact via two-way video and audio transmissions simultaneously. It has also been called visual collaboration and is a type of groupware. It differs from videophone in that it is designed to serve a conference rather than individuals. and
Telepresence refers to a set of technologies which allow a person to feel as if they were present, to give the appearance that they were present, or to have an effect, at a location other than their true location. Telepresence requires that the senses of the user, or users, are provided with such stimuli as to give the feeling of being in that other location.
Not having access to a Cisco 7985 & Cisco VideoConferencing Equipment myself, is the 7985 a useful participant in a multipoint conference using an MCU, or really on viable in a point to point application? Can it communicate with other H323 clients (Gnome/Ekiga, IPContact, etc.) using the proper URI?
What new Hardware/Software/Features do current implementations of TelePresence offer as an enhancement layer on top of videoconferencing?
As for 7985 being useful for multipoint conferences, it depends on the number of participants and the screen layout set on the MCU i.e. if there are about 16 participants and all of them are shown in small windows the overall impression is pretty weak. However, this model is rather useful in situations when you need a personal videoterminal that has to be compact.
