Sharing voip traffic over same physical line as data with UC320

Hello,

What are your experiences with either:

1) a computer and a voip phone sharing the same ehternet cable to a UC320 (the computer is connected to the PC port on a voip phone).

2) the computer being run to a UC320 on a dedicated ethernet cable to the UC320.

I would like to use a separate ethernet cable run for phones and computers, but of course this costs $$$ to lay more ethernet cable drops.

Does the QoS and CoS generally work good enough to use the same ethernet cable for both a voip phone and a computer?

Hi Clifford, the QoS is based off tag packets. The phone will be tagging the ingress packet and be marked for priority over the untagged packets which would be data. For your local extension to extension calls, you should never experience a problem with ethernet unless you have a massive amount of traffic and a poor network design.

However, if you're having audio qualities over the WAN, it is like either the ITSP or the ISP. All traffic is basically equal once the packets egress the WAN interface. You may be able to pay for differentiated services to be trusted by the ISP which would improve WAN quality much more.

A lot of deployments using more than 6 phones often have a dedicated T1 just for voice traffic.

I have many UC320W deployments using the same physical cable / Data connection for Voice and Data and same Internet connection however I only deploy this for small business up to 6 handsets max or depending on the nature of the business Internet requirements
